The Dangerous Ilhan Omar by Matt Zupon

Throughout the history of our great nation, Americans continuously dedicated multitudes of effort towards combatting hatred and bigotry. Though not perfect, our country serves as a great example of a fair and just nation. From fighting Confederates in the Civil War to blasting Nazis in World War II, the people and government of this nation stood united against these forces of malice for the good of all of God’s children. Our modern culture continues to shift towards a more accepting America. While political tribalism may sit at an all-time high, a sense of understanding exists between people when not discussing politics. Though despite all of this, the proclaimed “open-minded” party (Democrats) elected an Anti-Semite to Congress.

Representative Ilhan Omar, the Democratic Representative from Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District, engaged in a series of Anti-Semitic tropes this week. Controversy erupted as Ilhan Omar Tweeted a response to journalist Batya Ungar-Sargon, in which she claimed that AIPAC (American Israel Public Affairs Committee) paid-off politicians to support Israel. A few problems exist within this barbaric response. For one, AIPAC cannot donate directly to candidates. AIPAC does not operate as a political action committee but rather lobbies organizations to promote healthy foreign policy for US-Israeli relations.

The misinformed Representative took advantage of the moment and slammed Israel, the oasis of Democracy in a cesspool of authoritarianism known as the Middle East. Another issue with her Tweet is that AIPAC acts as a nonpartisan public affairs committee. Back in 2016, AIPAC hosted candidates from both the Republican and Democratic ticket to speak during the primaries. The notion that AIPAC solely supports Republicans as a way to gain leverage in Washington.

Additionally, Glenn Greenwald of The Guardian reported that House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) threatened to punish Rep. Omar and Rep. Tlaib (D-MI) over their criticisms of Israel. Omar responded in a highly sarcastic way, saying “It’s all about the Benjamins [sic] baby”, referencing hundred dollar bills and insinuating that GOP official received cash to defend Israel. Ironically, reports that individual members of AIPAC who donated small amounts to candidates in the 2018 cycle donated primarily to DEMOCRATS, the margin nine-to-five. And perhaps best of all, not a single donation from anyone related to AIPAC arrived in the pockets of McCarthy’s campaign.

As expected, Rep. Omar supports the BDS (Boycott, divestment, and sanctions) movement against Israel. The BDS movement started in 2005 and exists globally. In it, people steadfastly against the Israeli people by calling for the collapse of their economic system. The shocking part of these statements arises once you hear what Ilhan said in an August 2018 debate. In it, she admitted that the BDS movement proved fruitless in aiding the dual-state solution of Palestine and Israel. Needless to say, when she announced her support of the BDS movement, many Jewish constituents of hers cast their doubts about her rationality in Congress and feared for their brethren.

And for those who believe that Ilhan’s radical Anti-Semitism just started recently, think again. Back in 2012, far before a public career in Washington, Ms. Omar Tweeted out in furor:

Israel has hypnotized the world, may Allah awaken the people and help them see the evil doings of Israel. #Gaza #Palestine #Israel”.

Her contempt for the free state of Israel appears almost as radiant as her lack of knowledge. We must remember that Israel exists as a haven for those following the Jewish faith and remains under attack from neighboring Caliphates and liberal politicians in America.

The good people of Israel and all of those following the Jewish faith believe in the same creed as America: that commitment to labor and passion will result in fruitful benefits. Many people find it disgusting that people, let alone elected members of the American government, resort to Anti-Semitism to solidify their points. Following the heartwrenching Tree of Life Synagogue shooting in October of last year, everyone must work together to curb the wrath of Anti-Semitism and help protect a peaceful people. God bless Israel, God bless the Jewish people, and God bless all Americans!
