The Erosion of the Individual

“We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal; endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights; that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness” – Thomas Jefferson.  The American constitution was founded on the premise that every individual has equal protection under the law, a bill of rights, and the ability to pursue their wildest dreams, so long that they do not infringe upon the rights of other individuals.  At birth in this country, every person has the potential to be a billionaire, president, or anything he or she can put his mind to.

Unfortunately, our country has a flawed, racist past.  Until the year 1968, every individual truly did not have equal protection under the law.  Since then, President Johnson proclaimed an idea that has contributed to the erosion of the individual, rather than letting this nation move forward.  The President affirmed, “If you can convince the lowest white man he’s better than the best colored man, he won’t notice you’re picking his pocket. Hell, give him somebody to look down on, and he’ll empty his pockets for you.”  President Johnson’s perverted idea has infiltrated the minds of leftists today and is scarring our society. Leftists now play a game, in which individuals are not judged by the content of their character, as stated by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., but by the color of their skin.  Universities (places where everyone is demanded to look different but think the same) are dominated by liberal ideology, and consequently commit copious unethical actions. For example, according to Ben Shapiro’s media outlet, The Daily Wire, Harvard University boosts black applicants’ SAT scores by 30 points, while Asian applicants’ scores are docked over 200 points.  Harvard’s reasoning for this evaluation is flawed and inherently racist; furthermore, they are punishing Asian individuals because their “group” is very successful on average. This is not an accident, but systematic racism certainly is not the reason why Asians are currently a successful group. Asians played no role in American slavery. They are only punished as a group because they decided to immigrate to the freest country on earth and make proper decisions to succeed in life.

Conversely, since the 1968 civil rights movement, black single-parenthood in America has more than doubled from roughly 34%, to over 70% today. This is because of systematic racism, but not in the way liberals believe. Since 1968, African-Americans were endowed with equal protection under the law. Studies have concluded that social programs like welfare promote poverty. This seems counterintuitive, but according to PragerU, since President Johnson’s Great Society programs were implemented in 1966, the poverty rate in America has only decreased from 14.7% to 13.5% today.  Twenty trillion dollars (which is ironically the current value of the US debt) predicated towards poverty relief efforts only decreased the poverty rate by one percent. In addition, according a study conducted by the Swiss government, the American welfare system traps people in poverty and promotes passive behavior because people are not alloted incentives to work and earn more than their handout from the government. This system–intended to promote upward mobility–has done the opposite. In addition to neoliberal policy denying upward mobility, leftists childishly support affirmative action, a heinously racist way of determining whether a student will be admitted to a university or not.  For a thought experiment, let’s say a need-blind university’s department of admissions examines the identical transcripts of two students: Student A’s family brings in a total income of a million dollars per year, while Student B’s family brings in a total income of twenty thousand dollars per year. For the purpose of the exercise, assume Student A is black and Student B is white. If the admissions office were concerned about upward mobility, they would not be need-blind and would logically admit Student B; however, affirmative action requires that Student A be selected because of the color of his skin.

It is a disgrace that such a philosophy is practiced, but it unfortunately is not unpredictable.  Today, leftists want to play a game in which there are no individuals. There are only groups, determined by race and sex, and anyone who questions the morality or validity of their ideas is automatically denounced as “racist, sexist, misogynistic,” or their trigger word of the day. As conservatives and individualists, we should not stand for this nonsense. Leftists attack our ideas with such vitriol because we are concerned about objective reality and not playing the racist game that consumes them and degrades individualism.
